Course overview and goals

Why teach project management and design technology? Why show cases on airports? It’s just an engineering, specialized and too complex issue for architects? Can we manage a project without considering its life cycle? What are the methods to achieve a sustainable airport project? How can we talk about green if the airport is due to air traffic noise and pollution? It’s possible to create low carbon envelope for the airport terminal?

The purpose of this course is to answer these common questions and to provide an introduction and overview of sustainable projects, through outstanding examples in airport design, and to point out what are now the most effective design systems.

Students that wish to better understand the integrated design techniques needed to achieve project sustainability goals are seen as the Course target. Green buildings project success, failure, and current trends will be discussed. The concepts associated with environment design and construction will be considered as well as the international technical standards and the law framework. World outstanding new airport cases studies are discussed.

This Course will be a mix of lectures based on assigned readings, design development steps and specialised seminars with the participation of airport projects stakeholders as invited guest speakers. Familiarity with process approach in construction and with building systems and components (learned in 2nd year Laboratory) and base concepts of design phases documentation (design specifications, performance based design documentation, bid documentation, bill of quantities) are a prerequisite.

3) Reading assignments will be posted on the course blackboard site, with non-book readings either as pdf files or with instructions to access the reading material via the web. Additional articles and material may be handled out or posted on blackboard as the class progress.

Other didactic resources

During the first lessons in the presence the teacher will inform students about the virtual classroom functionality, access arrangements and activities covered.
In particular, it will remember the following information:
- The URL of the platform: http://el.unifi.it, which is also downloadable from a fast direct guidance to students;
- The mode of access to the platform: the students should only use the serial number and password provided by the secretariat at the time of enrollment (or the withdrawal of the student exams booklet), the same credentials used for booking exams and other services on-line the university (Note: the registration number must be 7 characters, possibly inserting a zero after the letter if you have a serial of 6 characters only);
- The enrollment key set by the teacher to prevent unwanted access to their course, limited to students actually attending the course in person. The teacher will inform the attending members to achieve the stated number of "enrollment key", or a password that will be required by the system when you first access the course by students. This key will be communicated to students attending after the close of registration and verification through the measurement of actual presence in the classroom.


Grades

Grades will be based on several factors. The following are the weights of grading:
Class participation: 15%
Mid-term test: 20%
Re-design Project: 40% (3rd Design Competition: Best Terminal Envelope for Green Airport Design)
Final exam: 25%

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Attendance to each class is expected and the class will begin on time: please remember to sign in after the break during each class.

Deadline in this class are firm and these are due. Assignments are due at the beginning of the scheduled class. If assignments are not handled on time, these will not be accepted. Extension of a due date will only be considered in an extreme circumstance.

Compliance with the University of Florence academic behaviour rules is assumed at all times and under all circumstances.

The laptop can be used only in the last row of the classroom. To minimize distractions, please do not use mobile phones, iPad, iPod or other electronic devices during class (such as during takeoff in an aircraft).
