"Footprints". Project for Magliano in Toscana - Grosseto
The course aims to organize a didactic experience whose focus is the practice of the project. In this logic also the aspects of theoretical-reflexive matrix will have to find in the development of the compositional proposal their field of elaboration, application, definitive revelation.

Learning Objectives - Part B
The laboratory is education to the project through the practice of the project itself; we intend to show how divination, the intuition of an architectural object, is a phenomenon that falls into a formative process, into a prolonged doing, into an ongoing execution: a gradual taking shape (in such a semantic universe the precept has a poietic root, an operative vocation and not a normative one). The chosen scale of intervention is the one of the medium sized, collective product, placed in a context of great environmental and historical value.
Prerequisites - Part B
Those included in the course of studies.
Teaching Methods - Part B
The core of the workshop is the work that originates, matures and acquires recognizable physiognomy in the classroom, through a doing in common (operational stamp of the teaching in the world of "arts and crafts"), it is divided basically along two lines, however, in solidarity and corresponding to each other. A first one made of communications, critical interventions, presentation of exemplary case studies; a second one centred on the analysis and discussion of the project proposals elaborated by the students according to the question and interview modalities. Among the construction and communication tools of the project, the three-dimensional model of study will be evaluated as an element of primary importance in understanding the project hypothesis in progress and its possible and necessary transmission.
Further information - Part B
The project will be carried out in groups of three people. The origin and the end of the laboratory are touched in the form of the architectural project. During the course of the course, auxiliary investigations will be carried out as well:
First exercise: Letture urbane
The first part of the course (October/December) is centered on the reading/interpretation of the place under study. A visit by the participants of the workshop to the country is foreseen. The tool used to reproduce the spatial casuistry of the urban plot of the country is the three-dimensional model; each group will select a section of the settlement matrix and will create a volumetric model on a scale of 1:50. The invoice will be agreed within the laboratory in order to obtain a homogeneous and comparable sampling (plant size: 42x42 cm/30x30 cm to be verified). The whole thus obtained will constitute a sort of abacus of the spatial solutions present in the village. The basic information will be provided by the surveys of Prof. Alessandro Merlo and by the field analysis directly carried out by the students. The model will be accompanied by a black and white photograph (the site, the country, the landscape.) and a text of 1000 characters (including spaces) that will be set according to lay-out.
Second exercise: 10 Immagini
Each work group will present a projection (power-point/pdf) titled10 Images.
Image 0-header, names of the participants of the group, motto of the project proposal; images 1-5 exercises of urban hermeneutics - interpretation of the existing; images 6-10 salient points of the existing project (konzept). The tools used will be photography, drawing, three-dimensional model, conceptual diagram, quotation (cinema, visual arts, literature, etc.).
Third exercise: "Paesi" from the Red Notebooks
"Quaderni rossi" is an exercise in observation and thought that originates from a small book by Ettore Sottsass. Two alphabets, two languages: writing and photography; in both cases reduced in size and technical skills: few commentary/interpretation phrases and an image produced by a mobile phone - a strategy to stay in the footsteps of Yoshida Kenkō. Subject of the research: Countries, intended as settlement models dialectically opposed to the big Stadt. "It takes two glances (.), one inside and one outside. Intimacy and distance. To talk about a country you have to stay in it, you have to have the inflammation of the residence, but you also have to feel strangers" (Franco Arminio). The exercise is individual. red workbook - textual notes
Support a notebook moleskine 13x21 cm (white sheets) and red cover
first page: country title / last page: author's name and email / coupled pages: left side of a photograph - printing on small plain paper (also black/white); right side - a short scolium for personal reflection or quotation (black ink is recommended). The dimensions of the photographs will preferably be the same for the entire collection; if you want to draw on previous images (cinema, photography, painting, video art, etc..) these will have to be re-photographed.
Type of Assessment - Part B
The verification of the results will be carried out through the comparison - comparison - of the different project hypotheses developed in the workshop; the students will have the same time frame to explain and argue the choices made: cultural references, priorities identified, strategies in place, results achieved. In the evaluation of the work carried out, all the activities hosted in the workshop - exercises, studies, presentations - will contribute to the formulation of a final judgement on the merits.
Calendar:
11 October 2016 Visit to Magliano in Tuscany
November 15, 2016 Delivery of first exercise Readings
13 December 2016 presentation of second exercise 10 images

Exam
The experiences carried out in the laboratory will all be subject to specific judgment and will contribute to the final evaluation.
List of materials required to pass the test:
three-dimensional model of an urban song scale 1:50 (size and morphology of the model according to lay-out) - cardboard-wood construction material in suitable thicknesses
three-dimensional model of the project proposal scale 1:50 (size and morphology of the model according to lay-out) - cardboard-wood construction material in suitable thicknesses
board mounted on rigid support according to lay-out
portfolio containing the exercise 10 images, the project report, plans, sections, profiles, renderings not present in the table (format and layout according to layout)
red exercise book (individual exercise)
dvd with all the files produced during the workshop (name, surname, e.mail address of each member of the group)
Particular attention will be paid not only to the conceptual and creative aspect of the composition, but also to the care and precision achieved in the graphic works and three-dimensional models produced for its representation.
Course program - Part B
Topic
The planning exercise concerns the walled village of Magliano in Toscana, in the province of Grosseto. The areas of intervention are located both in the historical fabric and in the first strip around the city walls facing east; the interventions and functional destinations to be allocated include:
the project for a surface car park (capacity 80/90 stalls) in the area near the walls identified by the municipal administration. The design must safeguard the possibility of occasional collective use of the site (festivals, fairs, markets) and imagine solutions that minimise its environmental impact.
the construction of a lift system from the yard to the historic centre (ramps and/or stairs/lift)
the layout of a pedestrian passage connecting the new car park to Porta San Martino, the old northern gate
the reorganisation of the landscape of the hillside below the car park - with the design of a pedestrian cycle path towards the valley with a resting point
the design of a building for collective use on Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, as a suture and recomposition of the continuity of the road curtain.
New civic centre on via Garibaldi
premises serving urban services
entrance hall
newspaper library, reading room
Seated conference room 70
Exhibition hall
tourist info-point (front office, offices, meeting room)
services. Two men's baths (including one for disabled people); two women's baths (including one for disabled people)
warehouse and its hoists
premises intended for territorial promotion:
research laboratories (max 4)
multifunctional space that can be set up (tourist and agricultural promotion)
services. Two men's baths (including one for disabled people); two women's baths (including one for disabled people)
storeroom
Outdoor accommodations
The proposal must provide for an overall reorganisation of the site where the project item is located. The rooms will enjoy gardens and open spaces of relevance.
Landscaping arrangements
new car park (80/90 stalls) with event space - open-air market
ski-lift systems towards via Garibaldi (accessibility also for the elderly and disabled)
design of the pedestrian path towards the San Martino gate
redesign of the hilly side towards the east along a cycle/pedestrian path
General information
Elevator and/or pedestrian ramps of adequate dimensions, suitable to allow the connection of the various levels of the building, according to what is established by the regulations in force regarding the removal of architectural barriers. The new building will be accessible from the "wide" street (now via Garibaldi) and from the newly built road at the foot of the village. The building can be developed on several levels (it is possible to plan in section the difference in level between the parking lot and the historical building). It is necessary to ensure the independent operation of the conference room and related services. Maximum building height equal to the ridge line of the highest neighbouring building. It is possible to design beyond the edge of the ancient walls (max. overhang 5 m - measurement to be verified after the topographic survey). Minimum height of laboratories and exhibition areas: 400 cm.; minimum height of service areas: 240 cm.; minimum height of other areas: 300 cm. Lighting. All the rooms must have natural lighting except the exhibition rooms, warehouses and services that can be designed with forced ventilation and artificial lighting.
Drawings
The students of the course will be given a lay-out as a guide to the graphic material to be written (.indd file) - number and size of tables, characters, contents. The three-dimensional models will be made entirely of wood cardboard. If you wish to present graphic materials as an integration, they must be printed in A5 format according to the assigned layout.
