Course Content
The course will explore the fundamentals of Landscape Architecture as they relate to culture and technique, in order to design options for sustainability. The practice will focus on Landscape Analysis and Diagnosis, exploring key factors and processes of landscapes changes.

Learning Objectives
The main objective of the course is to introduce students to the application of basic culture and technique of Landscape Design. Fundamental for experiential learning is the studio method, which will develop skills of design interpretation, representation and communication.
Prerequisites
Theoretical and applied basis depend on the scientific and technical knowledge acquired by the students through the courses of the previous years.
Teaching Methods
The course uses two complementary methods: through lectures we will support the theoretical knowledge, and thanks to instructional sessions and discussion we will emphasize the experiential learning. Two assignments will be evaluated. The first one will evaluate the student capacity of reading and critically analyse a project of landscape design. The second one will be a group project (max 3 students).
Further information
Each student will develop his/her own graphic skills. The use of computer technology GIS and CAD is recommended, but it is not specifically required.
Type of Assessment
Students will be evaluated individually. The final grade includes the evaluation of the two assignments and the personal elaboration of the lectures. The group project will be supported by periodic reviews and discussions with the teachers.

The understanding of key thoughts and masterpieces of international authors will be fundamental within the culture of the project. Focusing on meaningful experiences across the world, the central and most conspicuous part of the lectures will propose thematic discussions, in order to analyse and measure the Landscape Practice.
The program will answer the question of how to deal with the two main and complementary qualities of any landscape project: "landscape based" one and the "sustainability". This is the reason why we will explore how to use an integrated process based on ‘water+soil+plant sensitive design’.
The course uses two complementary methods: through lectures we will support the theoretical knowledge, and thanks to instructional sessions and discussion we will emphasize the experiential learning. Two assignments will be evaluated. The first one will evaluate the student capacity of reading and critically analyse a project of landscape design. The second one will be a group project (max 3 students).
The lectures are planned with the following chronological and thematic framework (acronyms T00 point the shared files proposed as basic references of the lectures):

The thematic lectures will be organized referring to Landscape Architecture projects around the world; to Landscape Design Studios from the previous years; to current issues and/or phenomena of the landscape under study during this present year.
Thanks to periodical joint meetings of studios, students are asked to discuss with the teachers about their projects and findings.
In order to foster a study relationship that simulates the normal activities of a project team, the group project will consider a real situation of landscape transformation in an urban context.
