What are the "fundamental questions" that the housing topic, in its constant evolution, places in comparison to the project itself? THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE HOUSE, caught in the relationship between domestic intimacy and collective everyday life as well as in the dialectical between the universality of the type and the specificity of the place, is at the centre of the Design Lab's research.

Learning Objectives - Last names H-Z
The aim of the Lab is the critical and design research on the topic of HOUSING.
The course aims, therefore, to provide students with the appropriate tools for the "composition" of a SMALL SINGLE-FAMILY HOUSE, caught in its relationship with the singular characteristics of a real fragment of the Tuscan landscape, as well as in the complexity of the spatial and "tectonic" relations that define it.
Prerequisites - Last names H-Z
Having achieved the exams prescribed by the prerequisites of the school's teaching regulations.
Teaching Methods - Last names H-Z
The PROJECT will be at the centre of the Design Lab's educational activities that will be almost totally reserved for the work of the students in the classroom; some short theoretical lessons, dedicated to specific topics, will integrate this activity.
The project will be elaborated by working groups composed by two / three students.
The Lab will open with an in-depth study on the subject of THE HOUSE BETWEEN TWO WALLS, during which will be analysed, from a compositional point of view, some paradigmatic examples (from modern to contemporary) through models and graphic works, on an appropriate scale to the comprehension of the dimensions of the spaces, of the respective hierarchies and of the relationships between served spaces and service spaces.
Subsequently, the architectural project of a SMALL SINGLE-FAMILY HOUSE will translate into a dialectic synthesis the analytical data emerged in the first phase.
Each student will document his own activity by means of a notebook with black cover, MOLESKINE format 12,8x21 cm. (white sheets), which will contain all his "travel notes": notes, sketches, drawings, photographs...
Design exercise
"One thing leads to another": Christian theologians distinguished a divine creation (operari ex nihilo) from the action of the author (Facere de materia); collecting this cue, the design exercise is understood as a radical metamorphosis-transformation of an existing artefact. It is planned to build a single-family house in the historic centre of Monterchi, Arezzo. Four "vocations" identify four different ways of developing the subject; they are:
The house of color and light _ the “atelier”, the painter’s house;
The house of the wind and the history _ the theater, the migrant’s house;
The house of memory and oblivion _ the library, the house of the man of letters
The house of treasure and ruins _ the museum, the collector’s house.
Each working group will adopt one of the profiles indicated above, defining on it the character of the construction.

Nothing else.
Type of Assessment - Last names H-Z
The methods for ascertaining the learning outcomes consist in verifying the attendance of the courses and participation in the proposed activities and in the evaluation of practical project exercises both in the intermediate phases and in the final phase.
Collective revisions/corrections in the classroom will alternate with individual ones (individual working groups): students must always present themselves with model(s) of study and drawings at the appropriate scale.
The final exam consists in the presentation and discussion of the design work carried out during the semester.
