The basic tools will be dealt with the aim of providing the instruments for the more frequent structural problems control, both in design and critical reading and interpretation. Constitutive equations, elastic equilibrium problem and yield criteria.
The de Saint-Venant problem: axial force, pure bending, eccentric axial force, pure torsion, shear.
Theory of structures: differential equation of beams for axial, flexural and shear deformations; displacement method.
Elastic stability: Euler’s formula.

The aim of the course is to provide the necessary tools to deal with structural problems both in design and check. The objective is achieved with the study of some fundamental elements of mechanics of solids (concepts of stress, deformation, constitutive relation) and their application to the analysis and verification of beams.
