The course aims to provide students with the basics for structural design and tools for the calculation of structural elements belonging to structures realized with traditional materials (concrete, steel, masonry, wood). With reference to current technical regulations, further details are given about design procedures concerning new constructions and interventions on existing structures as well.

Learning Objectives - Last names A-G
The First Level Degree Course in Sciences of Architecture aims to train a professional figure possessing the conceptual and operational control of the basic methods and tools needed to operate in the field of architectural design, conducted at different scales of representation.
According to the above objectives, the course aims to provide the architect with the basic elements allowing an adequate training in the structural field, within an integrated educational path connecting the structural design with the architectural and technological components.
Learning Objectives - Last names H-Z
- Comprehension of the structural behavior of buildings
- Assessment of the structural response of buildings with regards to the proper loads
- Assessment of the structural safety of buildings with regards to their use and to the proper hazard sources
- Design of structural details according to both architectural and safety criteria
Prerequisites - Last names A-G
Knowledge of basic mathematical notions and fundamentals of Statics and Science of Constructions.
Prerequisites - Last names H-Z
As required by the School regulations, the exam of “Scienza delle Costruzioni” must be taken
Teaching Methods - Last names A-G
The course aims to provide students with the skills necessary for the design of a non-complex structure. It is divided into theoretical lessons alternated with practical/applicative activities. In the first part of the course, theoretical lessons prevail; they provide students with basic notions for structural organization and tools for structural dimensioning, according to procedures established by current Italian technical codes. These lessons are combined with exercises aimed at consolidating the theoretical arguments. The second part of the course is mainly devoted to the development of design applications concerning the intervention on an existing structure and the structural design of a new construction. These applications allow the development of graphical tables to be discussed during the final examination.
Teaching Methods - Last names H-Z
The didactic activity consists both of theorical lectures and practical exercise.
Type of Assessment - Last names A-G
The final examination involves discussion of the tables drawn up during the design applications; knowledge of basic structural principles is also verified as well as the acquisition of the theoretical procedures necessary for the development of structural design.
Type of Assessment - Last names H-Z
The final exam consists of three steps:
- written test
- practical exercise
-. oral test
The written test involves the main topics faced during the class. It can be divided in three tests, each focused on a single topic, i.e.: analysis of a 2D frame through the displacement method, plastic and elastic analysis of a non-symmetrical section and design/verification of a steel connection.
The practical exercise consists of the re-design of an existing steel building selected by the student. It will comprehend all the main topics faced within the class.
The oral test consists mostly in the discussion of the practical exercise contents.

The contents of the course are divided into the following sections:
1. MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES
Mechanical properties of construction materials: stiffness, strength, ductility.
Notion of structural model.
Structural types and their characteristics in relation to the construction material.
Structural characteristics of masonry, concrete, steel and wood constructions.
Basis of structural organization, main and secondary elements. Horizontal and vertical resistant systems, bracing systems
2. LIMIT STATE METHOD

Mechanical behaviour of a masonry wall: stiffness, strength, ductility.
Shear strength of a masonry wall taking into account the different crisis mechanisms.
The path of knowledge for existing buildings: code requirements. Knowledge levels (LC) and confidence factors (FC).
Sizing of a steel closed frame by a simplified method.

The course focuses on the analysis, the design and the verification of steel structures. All the main topics are aimed at the assessment if the structural safety of the buildings. The branch of knowledge is proposed as connection between the theoretical knowledge already acquired by the students in the former exams (Statica and Scienza delle Costruzioni) and the constructive practice. The Technical regulations represent a fundamental support to the structural designer, and they will constitute the guidelines of the course’s contents.
All the main topics faced within the class will be applied on a case-study. The practical exercise will represent a fundamental opportunity of the students to apply the theoretical contents, and to interact with the professor. It can be developed by the single student or by working in team; anyway, each student will be in charge of the entire design process.
