Type of Assessment - Part A
The final exam consists of a written test (time allowed 1 h) with multiple choice questions and open questions, on the topics covered during the lessons and exercises. The test can be held at the end of the course in correspondence with the exam dates, or through ongoing tests during the semester. The written test is assessed out of thirty and weighs 50% on the final result of the exam. Passing the written test gives access to the oral test during which a project presented by the students is assessed on the basis of the tracks indicated by the teacher.
The exam as a whole (written test and oral test) aims to verify: mastery of the fundamental concepts, ability to apply them to real cases, appropriateness of technical terminology.
Type of Assessment - Part B
Write test and oral examination
Course program - Part A
Wood as a material of biological origin: implications on the Carbon cycle.
The structure of wood: elements of ultrastructure of the cell wall, types of wood structures.
The nomenclature of wood species, elements of macroscopic and microscopic identification.
The defects of the wood. - The relationships wood water, the water contained in the wood, equilibrium moisture, effects of changes in humidity on the behavior of the wood, shrinking swellings. Cupping and other types of deformation. The density and basal density.
Mechanical characteristics of wood. Elastic behavior. Influence of defects and humidity on resistance. Viscoelastic behavior and mechano sorption.
The natural durability of wood: wood-altering organisms. Environmental conditions that favor the alteration of wood.
Technical standards in the wood and derivatives sector, classification for structural uses. Technological characteristics of wood species and their intended use.
Wood processing. Sawing, blanking, peeling, numerical control work centers. Wood-derived products: sawn, glue laminated products, plywood panels, LVL, particle board and fibreboard, OSB, Parallam, microlaminar. Wood Plastic composites.
The glues for wood. Thermosetting glues and thermo-plastic glues. Glues urea formaldehyde, phenol glues, MUF glues, vinyl glues. Bonding of wood critical factors.
