The course provides knowledge, tools, and solutions for the implementation of territorial projects and the management of complex decision-making processes in terms of strategic planning, urban governance, and territorial cooperation, interactive design support for the development of socio-economic and environmental sustainability, in the pandemic and post-pandemic political context (NU SDGs and Agenda 2030, EU Urban Agenda, Green Deal, Next-generation EU; SNSvS; Horizon Europe 21-27).
Learning Objectives
The course intends pursuing the following training objectives:
- design urban and territorial policies for sustainable development;
- improve the acknowledgment of problems and the formulation of solutions;
- coordinate complex decision-making processes for the implementation of territorial policies;
- manage interactive processes for territorial planning through participatory democracy;
- promoting innovative, cooperative, and technological solutions;
- evaluate the results achieved - intermediate and final - and make them comprehensible externally for communication and accountability purposes;
- increase the coherence and synergies that can be activated between the policies of the different institutional levels: regional, national, and of the European Union.
Prerequisites
Previous knowledge and prerequisites to attend the course are the following: knowledge and familiarity with the theory and models of territorial planning, knowledge of the Italian planning system both from an institutional and a technical point of view.
Teaching Methods
The effectiveness of the course is based on the attendance and active collaboration of students in the different learning phases. Different teaching methods will therefore be alternated including lectures, interactive seminars on a digital platform (and in presence if possible), collective exercises, and individual training courses.

Students are required to register on the platform. Subscription to the platform will allow the students to access information, communications from the teacher and teaching material, as well as lessons recorded on cisco-webex.
Knowledge of English (mainly understood as reading skills and understanding of written texts) may be necessary for the in-depth study of some topics covered in the course.
Type of Assessment
Types of assessment for all students, attending and non-attending, consist of the following student activities:
- individual or group contributions, laboratory activities, and intermediate tests (30%);
- the critical ability to interact on the problems and issues raised during the didactic workshops (10%);
- the effectiveness of learning based on the implementation of the issues presented by the teacher and studied in the recommended texts (10);
- the final exercise (40%).
Finally, the final discussion during the examination will contribute to the overall evaluation (10).
In particular, students will have to develop the following activities:
1. carry out the readings (individually) recommended by the teacher with reference to the topics of the lessons [the texts will be made available by the teacher on the moodle platform of the course];
2. carry out the final exercise (in groups) on the theme of the course according to detailed guidelines provided by the teacher. The final and central exercise of the course consists of the design of an interactive process on the topic of sustainability for the construction of an Urban Agenda of Prato Post Covid-19, in which the following topics will be addressed: Prato city 15-minutes; Ob. 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) of the 2030 Strategy; Reinventing cities C40.
