The course is an element of the "LABORATORY OF LAND DESIGN" aimed at introducing the themes of land planning in agroforestry areas.

Learning Objectives
The course aims to train students on key issues related to the territorial analysis, planning, programming and management of natural and semi-natural systems, with particular attention to their integration in spatial planning instruments and rural development. The module provides students with a wealth of theoretical knowledge and practical tools for the characterization and the territorial representation of agro-forestry and pastoral resources. With a focus on systems with greater ecological value.
the latest generation tools are presented for the spatial representation of these systems, including through the use of remote sensing data sources. the themes of evaluation of natural and environmental value of agricultural, forestry and pastoral systems, evaluation of ecological networks and measures taken to restore them are addressed.
the tools are provided to the multi-scale implementation of strategies aimed at maximizing the ecosystem functions of these environments and the conservation and environmental protection. They are presented the assessment tools for time trends and evolution of the landscape and the impact of anthropogenic disturbances. With particular reference to climate change scenarios.

Introduction to the aims and methods applied to monitoring and territorial representation of natural and semi-natural systems. The forest definition. Forest inventories and forest maps. Management and planning of agro-forestry and pastoral resources. The sustainable management and forest certification. Goods and services produced by forest ecosystems. ecosystem services. Examples of territorial and cartographic information at European, national and local levels.
Introduction to optical remote sensing. basic physical principles. Active radar sensors, LiDAR and multispectral optical sensor systems. Colorimetric additive synthesis, natural color and false color. vegetation indices.
Qualitative and quantitative maps of natural and semi-natural systems: photo interpretation, classification, spatial estimates with parametric and non-parametric methods.
