The course will be aimed to the learning of the main, basic graphical skills for the representation of architecture in all its forms: historical, monumental, design, conceptual, virtual, etc. The main approach to the theme will follow a path starting from the traditional techniques with some references to the computer graphic and the description of the more useful meeting points between the analogic and the digital procedures of representation.

Learning Objectives - Last names A-D
The course aims to provide the students with the knowledge of the conceptual and practical means of the architectural design representation: geometry, metrical and structural systems, representation codes, from the two points of view of the shape and its representation.
Conventional drawing systems, applied to examples of different kinds, are explained giving evidence to their aptitude for describing the expression complexity of architectural shapes.
Learning Objectives - Last names E-M
The students will acquire and/or enhance their own skills in the
representation of the architecture.
Prerequisites - Last names E-M
No meaningful skills are required before starting the course. But the will
to draw architecture is needed.
Teaching Methods - Last names E-M
Lectures, in class exercises, out of the class exercises, at home exercises.

The lessons based on multimedia presentations will be available for
downloading in PPT and/or PDF format. The Links for downloading them
will be sent in the course mailing list.

The examination: what is required
The student will bring the sketchbook to the examination; it will be completed of every single drawing developed during the year, correctly composed and in good overall conditions.
Together with the sketchbook a group of sheets on opaque paper are required; this exercise is single for each student and will be described in the next pages. It will be prepared on A3 size sheets, the weight and the grain of the paper is a student’s choice. The details description of this exercitation will be available after its presentation, in the second semester.
During the first part of the examination the student will be asked to produce a set of drawing in an ex-tempore exercitation, this will be done on paper sheets brought by the student, but signed and stamped before the exercitation start. The subject ot the exercitation will be assigned the same day of the examination. This ex tempore will be subject to an evaluation, if this one will be positive the students will have a colloquy about their work during the course (the sketchbook and the A3 exercitations).

Resume of all the excercises assigned during the course:
Exercise 1 - The room number 17 in the “Santa Verdiana” building. One plan view and two meaningful sections (passing by openings and vault centres). To be drawn by freehand using pencils, on one or more A4 paper sheets. Pay attention to the correct representation of proportions, of the architectural aspects, of the openings. It
is suggested to start the drawing from a grid of proportions, defining later the walls and the details.
Exercise 2 - Designing a lamp. In this exercise it is required the design of a table lamp, conceived and projected by the student. The lamp can be defined to be placed on the table or on the ground lighting the table, to stand it can use a base or a clamp, the lighting system is fully free. The drawings required are: a plan, lateral and frontal view and a vertical section view (meaningful). Freehand pencil drawing on paper, A4 format, one or more drawings on each sheet. Inks and colours are considered as optional. All the drawing must be quoted with proper measures.
Exercise 3 - Three colours / three architectures, in this exercise the student is asked to represent three different architectures (perspective, orthographic, front view are accepted) with a the total prevalence of one colour, for the first one: red, for the second one: yellow, for the third one: blue. The architectures can be chosen between existing or they can be designed by the student. It is quite important to chose architectures capable to support well the specific colour and exalt the relationship architecture/colour. A
revision of the drawing is required before passing from the clean drawing to the colouring.
Exercise 4 - The main door of the Santa Verdiana church. Draw a front view and two section (one vertical, one horizontal) and a detail freely chosen and drawn in orthographic or perspective view, of the door giving access to the church of St. Verdiana. Freehand pencil on white paper, A4 format one or more sheets. Coloring and inks are optional. The door must be completed with all its decorations, the frames and the tympanum.
Exercise 5 - In this exercise the student must represent the grapich logo/brand for one of this two imaginated activities: the architecture firm “Angela Mancuso & Andrea Pasquali, Architects” and the graphical service studio (for archaeology and historical themes) “Panaiotis Kruklidis”. Once chosen one of the two the student must produce the logo/brand, freehand or supported hand drawing, free graphic techniques. On white paper A4 format.
Exercise 6 - Archaeological reconstruction, the student can choose one of the three suggested themes downloadable from: http://1drv.ms/1xlcfY7 Single or double A4 sheet with good layout and presenting one plan view, preliminary sketches for the fronts, high eye-point view of the reconstructed area (orthographic or perspective view), a minimal graphical description of the materials is required. Subjects: Byzantine Basilica on the Iznik Lake, Bursa, Turkey, 500 A.D. (starting from the almost complete basement remains) / Norman motta in Dinan, France Britain, 1066 A.D. (starting from a representation on a tapestry) / Avigliara Castle, Piemonte, Italy, 10th century (from a fresco paint, and from some ancient engraving and some existing remains).
Exercise 7 - One bay from the Santa Verdiana cloister. Pencil drawing on white paper (ink and/or colours are optional). Required drawings: Horizontal section, vertical transverse section, front on the garden (all these drawing must be completed drawing a part of the nearby walls/bays); schematic plan view showing the selected bay (use colours or underline to put it in evidence).
Exercise 8 - The entrance to the room 17 in the Santa Verdiana Building. In this exercise the space giving access to the room 17 must be represented in 5 drawings: 2 vertical sections, one horizontal section, one perspective view, one orthographic view. All the drawing must be realized using pencils. These drawings have then the purpose to be the base for colouring the students own proposals to repaint this space. Drawings in graphical scale, the colouring must be done using coloured pencils and/or felt-tip pens, all the drawings to be presented on A4 (or similar) format sheets.
Exercise 9 - Menabò/draft version of the whole group of the 16 plates composing the final exercitation. Freehand drawing, pencil or other graphic tool, 4 plate thumbnail in A4 format sheet. Each draft must show: layout idea, sketches of the contents, clear indication of the chosen subjects. IMPORTANT: for the students willing to have the exam in January/February this exercise must be presented no later than: 9th december, 12.45 (room 17, Santa Verdiana).
IMPORTANT
All the drawings consigned to the professor/assistants during the year and never taken back must be picked up by the student BEFORE the exam. Any missing exercitation will be considered “undone” and not fitting the exam requirements. The course does not take any responsibilities about missing/lost drawings after long times, any missing exercise according to the previous list will be considered as “not valuable”. All the drawings consigned during the exam session will remain in the course archive. Any copy/duplicates must be done BEFORE the
exam. It is NOT foreseen any late take back for limited or unlimited time for any reason after the exam is done.
