The module proposes:
a) A reading of sustainable territorial development through models of the relationship between economy, society, and the environment, especially local models, according to bioeconomy perspectives;
b) The consideration of ISTAT databases and maps for the interpretation of Italian local economies;
c) Application to the evaluation of sustainable development projects.
The conceptual insights will have as premise cases of industrial districts and metropolitan cities.

Learning Objectives
This module aims to develop students' awareness of the need to also incorporate an economic approach into strategic local planning projects.
To this end, the module will develop specific knowledge on:
- models and concepts of territorial development, on the study of cases of local productive systems, on their relations with the territory in a perspective of sustainability;
- use of geographies of local ISTAT systems in case studies;
- methods of economic evaluation of sustainable development projects.
The skills acquired will allow the application of the concepts and theoretical schemes referred to above to the multilevel reading of territorial development, starting from local systems, with specific attention to Italy and Tuscany, also in the context of research on sustainable development and circular economy.
Prerequisites
Basic notions of economics and statistics are useful.
Teaching Methods
Lectures (28 hours), exercises (10 hours), seminars (4 hours); students elaborate presentations (workgroups or individually) and discuss them in classroom (6 hours)
Further information
The presentations (see section "modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento") are selected by students (individually or in groups) within a list more precisely specified at the lesson.
Type of Assessment
The exam is integrated into the assessment procedures of the II-year Territorial Planning Laboratory.
In particular, the following will be required:
- the preparation of short research into the contents of this module and its presentation; the presentation can be the result of group work; it involves the preparation of a presentation file and its use in the classroom for presentation; the individual contribution must be recognizable;
- a written test on questions concerning a part of the reference texts in class; the written test includes 4 to 6 open-ended questions; the written test can be repeated once by January 2023;
- the evaluation of the module (average of the results of the presentation and of the written test) is individual and out of thirty and will enter the final evaluation of the Laboratory;
The texts for the written test (a subset of the reference texts for the lessons) are:

Course program
Module sessions include lectures, tutorials, seminars, an intermediate written test, and student presentations.
The lessons, in particular, are organized around three thematic nuclei:
a) The first part introduces the relationship between land construction and sustainable development starting from the models of the industrial district and local development by Giacomo Becattini, and from a reference to the bioeconomic program as proposed by Nicolas Georgescu- Roegen;
b) The second part concerns the multilevel reading of the territories, in particular, the identification of various types of local systems by ISTAT with specific databases and maps;
c) The third part concerns the methods of economic evaluation of sustainable development projects
The nuclei a), b) have the support of the discussion of cases of local productive systems in the face of contemporary challenges.
In particular, the following sequence of sessions is foreseen (N.B. specific topics and sequence of sessions can be adapted during the module):
