FAQ INCOMING STUDENTS

 

DO I NEED TO KNOW ITALIAN?

Almost all the teaching offer at the School of Architecture is carried out in italian language, except for the ICAD degree programme (entirely taught in english) and some of the thematic seminars. An official certiticate of Italian B1 level is required at the application, while the recommended knowledge of English is a B2 level

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE ARRIVING IN FLORENCE?

Once you have been nominated by your home university, you can start your application procedure: the Enrolment Form and the Learning Agreement have to be sent to the International Relations Office (archint [AT] unifi.it), according to the deadlines of each semester.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO ONCE I AM ARRIVED IN FLORENCE?

Step 1.
The first thing to do is to check-in at the School of Architecture, by visiting our International Office (Via della Mattonaia 8, Ground floor) with your identification document (Passport or ID card). Here you will receive all your documents (Enrolment form and Learning Agreement) signed and sealed.
Step 2.
You need to go to Agenzia delle Entrate (Via Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, 23, OR Via dell’Agnolo, 80) in order to get your Tax code.
Step 3.
Enrol at the Erasmus Front Office/Novoli - D15/room 003 (P.zza Ugo di Toscana n° 5). Bring your Enrolment Form, Learning Agreement, Tax code, two passport size pictures and your ID card. The admin staff will check your application documents and will release your student number (MATRICOLA), a student card (LIBRETTO UNIVERSITARIO) as well as your USER ID (student number) and a temporary password (date of birth). These last will be necessary to register to exams and to have access to all the online service on https://sol.unifi.it/.

HOW IS THE ACADEMIC SYSTEM IN FLORENCE ORGANIZED?

The Italian University System is divided between Laurea Triennale I CICLO (Bachelor’s Degree), Laurea Magistrale II CICLO (Master’s Degree) and Laurea Magistrale a ciclo unico (5 years’ Master's Degree).

The School of Architecture in Florence offers a wide range of degree programmes: 3 bachelors of three years, 6 masters of 2 years and 1 five years’ degree course. Classes take place in three different campuses depending on the subject areas. Campus are located in Florence (Architecture and Landscape Architecture), Calenzano (Design) and Empoli (Urban Planning).

In accordance with their home institution, Eramsus students are allowed to take classes in any campus at any level and year of study, if the preliminary knowledge required is met. Before filling the Learning Agreement, we highly recommend to check carefully the course catalogue and the contents of the subject listed under the section "contenuti del corso".

WHEN DOES THE SEMESTER START AND FINISH?

Classes of the winter term usually start in the second half of September and finish in the second half of December; those of the spring term usually start in the third week of February and finish at the beginning of June. Winter exams take place in January and February, while spring exams occur in June and July. Be aware that, in case you fail the exams in the abovementioned sessions, you have the possibility to try them again in April and September.

Always check the didactic calendar before planning your arrival in Florence and your final departure.

DOES THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORENCE PROVIDE ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSES?

Yes, once arrived in Florence, you can attend a free Italian language course at the Centro Linguistico di Ateneo – CLA by registering on the website under the section Italian L2 “ISCRIZIONI”. Please note that all language courses offered by CLA start from the A2 level upwards. Also, note that the Italian Language Course is not an academic exam and it does not provide ECTS credits or mark, so it cannot be added to your Learning Agreement and it will not be certified in your official Transcript of Records.

CAN I CHANGE MY LEARNING AGREEMENT?

Yes, you can change the subjects you have chosen with your Learning Agreement Before the Mobility, but remember that you are allowed to make adjustments to the original study plan just one time per semester. Be careful to the deadlines. Here’s the procedure to follow:
1. Download the change form;
2. Fill in the form with the correct exam codes and make it signed and stamped by your home university;
3. Send the form to the Architecture International Office or bring it personally during the office hours;
4. The International Relations Office will approve it and send it to the Erasmus Desk at Novoli, which will update your study plan in the online system.

CAN I EXTEND MY EXCHANGE PERIOD?

Yes, if your home University accepts. The student can ask for an extension of the study period within one month before the end of his/her Erasmus. The extension can be up to a period of a total of 12 months but you have to finish your mobility period no later than the 30th of September. Here is the procedure for extending your mobility:
1. Download the Extension Form;
2. Send the Extension Form to your home university exchange coordinator, asking to sign it (scan version is ok);
3. Return the Extension Form to the Architecture International Relations Office.

DOES THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORENCE PROVIDE ACCOMODATIONS FOR EXCHANGESTUDENTS?

Unfortunately, our Institution does not provide accommodations for exchange students studying at the University of Florence. You can find useful tips regarding on this matter.

ARE THERE ANY FACILITIES FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORTS?

Yes. Erasmus students, as students of the University of Florence, have the opportunity to obtain the Tuscany Student Card  (CARTA DELLO STUDENTE DELLA TOSCANA). Among its various uses, it gives access to public transports in Florence.
